Voice of a Maverick: A Vocal Coach Shares Secrets of the Stars

August 09 03:25 2023

With over two decades of experience coaching singers, Valerie Morehouse, author of “A Better Voice”, has had a front-row seat to the transformative power of music. Yet, the path that led her to where she is now, includes moments of struggle and doubt, before eventual triumph. As she embarked on her journey of writing the new book, A Better Voice: Straight from the Entertainment Industry Frontlines, she contemplated whether her experiences would resonate with her readers. But as a trusted friend wisely pointed out, her unique vocal techniques sprung from her personal journey of vocal recovery-a journey that readers can certainly connect with.

Valerie’s lifelong passion for singing can be traced back to an afternoon when she was just eight years old. In the solitude of her small bedroom at 42 Honeypots Road, Surrey, England, she played her brand-new 45 RPM vinyl of Elton John’s “Rocket Man” on her plastic record player. As the opening bars filled the room, she started to sing along-quietly at first, then more intensely. Immersed in the melody and lyrics, she found herself lost in her own world, a world painted with vivid hues of her imagination. It was in that defining moment that Valerie realized her life’s purpose-she was born to sing.

However, Valerie’s journey was not without hurdles. In high school, her voice started to tire, causing her pain and discomfort. Singing, which was her identity and her life, was being snatched away from her. Although the doctor advised her to reduce her extracurricular activities, Valerie’s tenacity and dedication to singing pushed her to persist. She powered through, receiving national awards for her vocals and becoming a well-known figure in the Southern Californian music scene. But despite her determination, her voice couldn’t withstand the strain. Her doctor diagnosed her with vocal cord nodules and suggested rest or a move to a humid climate.

Ignoring the doctor’s advice to rest her voice, Valerie decided to study vocal anatomy and speech pathology. Her search for a solution led her to Tokyo, Japan, a humid location that her boyfriend had often spoken about. The combination of Tokyo’s humidity, her rigorous vocal exercises, and the language barrier forcing vocal rest, all worked in her favor. Her voice started to heal, and her nodules disappeared. This successful recovery made Valerie understand the crucial role of vocal health and healing.

Upon her return to Southern California, Valerie began working in the music industry, first in a small record distribution company and then at Maverick Records, a label run by Guy Oseary and Madonna. Here, she got a close look at the highs and lows of being a professional singer, working with stars like Alanis Morissette, The Prodigy, and Deftones.

Despite the glamorous facade of the industry, Valerie found herself grappling with self-doubt. She wondered if she was fulfilling her potential. After seven years in the business, she found herself at a crossroads. It was during a heart-to-heart with her father, who was battling cancer at the time, that she found her direction. His words, “Valerie, leap and the net will appear”, gave her the courage she needed to carve her path.

Inspired by her father’s advice, Valerie quit her job and started her own business, focusing on vocal coaching. She delved into the study of vocal anatomy and pathology, seeking out doctors who specialized in the voice to gain insight. Her relentless quest for knowledge and her dedication to helping other singers made her realize that there was a significant gap in the market for vocal coaches who could help rehabilitate singers after an injury or surgery. This realization became her niche, setting her off on an exciting journey.

Today, Valerie finds joy not just in singing, but also in helping others unlock their vocal potential. Her fulfilling career allows her to guide her clients through their healing journeys, helping them overcome their struggles and regain their confidence. With some clients being platinum record-holding artists, she takes great pride in their dedication to her techniques and their subsequent success.

In “A Better Voice”, Valerie brings readers behind the scenes of the music industry, sharing inspiring stories of her clients and explaining the tools she has developed to help singers reach their highest potential. She provides an insider’s view of what every client learns before they sing a single note, ensuring they understand the fundamental anatomy and workings of the voice. This blend of personal experience, expertise, and practical guidance makes “A Better Voice” an enlightening read for anyone interested in the art and science of singing.
